Do You Remember Your First Car (I Mean Air Conditioner)

Do you remember your first car? If you were a new driver in the 1980’s it could have been the classic Ford Pinto, or the AMC Gremlin maybe?

Remember those days you may have had to put a screwdriver down the butterfly of the carburetor so fuel would roll through and the car would start?

What made you get rid of that first car? What made you decide to upgrade? Was it the cost of repairs? Did it start needing this and that to even function at the basic level for you? Was it increasing operational costs for you? Started to really eat oil and gas so you needed to do something to save money on that end? Was it that parts were no longer available or finding someone who knew how to repair the ‘old gal’ was getting harder and harder?

Your Air Conditioning System is NO different than this first car analogy! Yes, it may still function. Yes, it may just need this or that at the beginning of the heat season but so often we do not calculate what it is costing us to operate daily.

You may have heard in the Air Conditioning world the term S.E.E.R.. What that term basically means – it is the calculation of your operating costs of your heating and air conditioning system.

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is a metric used to measure how much cooling a system puts out for each unit of energy it consumes. Pretty neat calculation when you look at it.

No, I am not trying to talk you into a new system!

From a home owner stand point I just want you to really consider the costs of your current unit. I have watched Facebook posts this past week with pictures of car temperatures flying by, and others sharing worries of the next electric bill. We are attentive to the fact that our Air Conditioning systems are a cost and I merely want to help you cut back on that cost if possible.

There are a few ways to cut back on operational costs and we are here for you if you would like to explore any of them:

A programable thermostat
Better duct sealing and attic vents
Regular maintenance on your existing system
Coil cleaning
Of course, should your system be at the stage where it is just going to eat the gas and oil like your old car we can sure help you pick a new unit with a great S.E.E.R. rating so you can start saving. I would be doing us both a disservice if I did not share that!
